The Trans Agenda
[22 September 2024]
Welcome to The Trans Agenda: The papers, a newsletter that will arrive in your inbox every week if you are subscribed.
In the papers I monitor, there were 14 articles this week about trans people yet, unusually, in amongst those 14 there were three from the The Guardian that weren’t attacks and one from The Times that could also easily fall into that category. Not only that, Sonia Sodha’s column in The Observer this weekend was about assisted-dying and she managed to write the whole thing without mentioning trans people once. Something certainly seems to have shifted as Guardian editor Kath Viner continues to be blown about by the wind.
The unveiling of Teresa Margolles' powerful new installation on the Fourth Plinth, "Mil Veces un Instante" (A Thousand Times in an Instant) takes up a lot of the coverage with The Telegraph, as usual, the most unhinged about the whole thing. I’ll have a more in-depth piece on their ‘review’ coming up soon, so keep an eye out for that.
After that, we have a GC settling a tribunal after she sued for harassment for being told to stop being abusive. Five of the 14 articles this week were about that while another two were about a group of GCs being kicked out of a pub. So, in reality, half the articles this week were about people who hate trans people, rather than trans people themselves.
All-in-all, it was a very quiet week. The Telegraph led the way, as always, with five articles, three of which came on one day. That’s quite a big reduction for them when you consider the first week I tracked the numbers they had 22. The Mail were next with four, The Guardian had the aforementioned three and The Times just the two.
