The Trans Agenda: The week ahead 20 May - 26 May
News you need, the perspective you won't find anywhere else. The trans community's guide to UK news, media and politics and our place in it.
Well, folks, it looks like Parliament has decided to give us a break this week. Not a single bill, debate, or whisper about trans rights is on the agenda. Instead, they're all buggering off for yet another recess until June 3rd. Sigh. I guess we'll have to find other ways to keep ourselves entertained. How ever will we cope?
This week in Parliament
From Monday to Thursday, nothing of note for our community is happening in the hallowed halls of Westminster. On Wednesday, we have Prime Minister's Questions, but let's be honest, it's unlikely to touch on any issues that directly affect us as Keir Starmer steers clear of anything that will give Rishi Sunak a chance to remind people that Starmer once supported trans people.
This week: Beyond the (silent) chambers
While Parliament takes a nap, the world keeps spinning. Here's a quick rundown of some key events happening this week:
Monday: The long-awaited final report from the UK infected blood inquiry is published, hopefully offering some closure to the victims and families affected by this devastating scandal. Rishi Sunak is set to sign off on a £10billion compensation scheme for victims.
Tuesday: The International Booker Prize winner is announced, and we might even get closing arguments in Donald Trump's trial.
Wednesday: Northern Ireland junior doctors are on strike, fighting for better working conditions.
Thursday: It's World Turtle Day! A perfect excuse to celebrate these amazing creatures and raise awareness about their conservation.
Friday: Birmingham Pride kicks off, offering a much-needed weekend of celebration and community for our LGBTQ+ siblings.
Saturday: A whole host of Pride events are taking place across the country, from Aberdeen to Witney.
Sunday: Durham Pride rounds out the weekend's festivities.
