The Trans Agenda
[17 June 2024]
Welcome to The Trans Agenda: The papers, a newsletter that will arrive in your inbox every week if you are subscribed.
Although I’ve been going through the papers regularly for some time, I only started recording the number of articles a couple of months ago. That isn’t a huge amount of data, but it is enough to make some claims after what happened in the papers this week, or, rather, didn’t happen.
Looking at the papers regularly, you come to expect a few things. Firstly, there will be numerous articles every day spread across the papers that I monitor and they will be vicious. Secondly, any news story will also generate a raft of anti-trans opinion from unqualified idiots, like any of the people at Sex Matters, for instance. Thirdly, the Sunday papers love opinion.
This has changed recently. This weekend, for instance, there were just three articles on trans people. Compare to the first weekend I recorded which had 12.
There were 108 anti-trans articles in the first 17 days I started keeping track. In the 17 days since Parliament was dissolved there were 37 and 15 of those came in two days after Kemi Badenoch's Equality Act announcement. Badenoch’s series of car crash interviews also stands as a marker where coverage dropped even more.
While there were articles featuring Rosie Duffield and others that gave passing mention to trans people this week. I have not included those as they weren’t specifically about trans people. Articles, for instance, covering manifestos featured small sections on what they had to say about gender and trans people but as part of larger articles.
As always, the full article is in the alt text. If there is no alt text, it is an image of a continuation and the full article text is in the image before.

I was expecting a lot of content today as the Lib Dems released their manifesto yesterday and the GCs were not happy. But, as you can see, there was nothing on trans people. No columns from Sex Matters or the LGB Alliance or Kathleen Stock telling us why the Lib Dems are aligned with the devil, nothing. This trend continued throughout the week as Labour and the Conservatives released theirs.

Note how Sean Ingle, who believes cave men could throw spears better than cave women and that’s why trans people should be banned from sport refuses to use any pronouns for Lia Thomas. Although all the papers covered this story, only the Guardian were a real arse about it.

Even The Telegraph gender Thomas correctly while they avoid misleading readers by writing, “The hearing, then, had focused on the question of whether Thomas had the right to challenge the rules, rather than whether the actual transgender policy was unlawful and discriminatory.”

While the bulk of this article is problematic, the headline is what most people will notice and I can’t imagine that James Beal is happy with the sub who wrote this one…
