The Trans Agenda
[9 June 2024]
Welcome to The Trans Agenda: The papers, a newsletter that will arrive in your inbox every week if you are subscribed.
When the week started with an announcement that the Tories planned to change the Equality Act to allow them to discriminate against trans people, I feared a paper-heavy seven days ahead. This, I thought, was finally the start of the onslaught we’ve all been expecting, with every member of Sex Matters and the LGB Alliance phoning in multiple columns that I’d have to wade through. Weirdly, despite the promise to use trans people as a culture war battering ram, and the Tories offering them plenty of red meat, the papers mostly refused the invitation to fill their pages with a week’s worth of opinion columns based on Monday’s news. Instead, they all reported it and then largely moved on to other issues.
We even had some rarely-spotted non-negative articles, one in The Times on Tuesday and another in The Telegraph on the same day. The Times even correctly gendered a trans woman who is accused of murder. It’s almost like they know more people are paying attention, so they’re throwing us a shattered bone to make up for the ones they helped break.
Sonia Sodha returned with her one column in this weekend’s Observer on a day that even the Mail on Sunday and Sunday Times took a break from torturing trans people.
In total, there were 21 articles about trans people with three in The Guardian/Observer, six in the Daily Mail (four days with nothing), five in The Times/Sunday Times (four days with nothing) and seven in The Telegraph/Sunday Telegraph (two days with nothing).
The papers are keeping a steady pace, mostly in line with their output since I started keeping count back in April. In the 19 days since the election was called there have been 58 articles. In the 19 before, there were 60.
As always, the full article is in the alt text. If there is no alt text, it is an image of a continuation and the full article text is in the image before.
